This is one of the airports in Haiti which has been developed with grant money from the American government. The airport was opened in 1965 as Francois Duvalier International Airport, named after Haitian president Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier. It is Haiti's only jet way, and handles the vast majority of the country's international flights. Air Haiti, Tropical Airways and a handful of different types of flights from Europe, the Caribbean and Atlantic, and the Americas serve this airport.
