The airfield started as Kindley Field during the Second World War, a joint US Army Air Forces (USAAF) / Royal Air Force (RAF) base. At the end of the War, while the RAF forces in Bermuda were withdrawn, the local RAF Commander stayed on loan to the Bermuda Government resulting in a local government operated Civil Air Terminal. However due to the closure of another flying boat facility, Bermuda's air routes were taken over by USAF land planes operating through the Kindley Air Force Base. In 1970, it was was transferred to United States Navy and until 1995, it operated as US Naval Air Station, Bermuda. In 1995, on termination of the 99-year lease by the US, the field reverted to the Bermuda Government with the Ministry of Tourism & Transport being responsible for it. .


Airports in Bermuda : The airport is located in the western portion of St. David's Island to the south of Ferry Reach, some miles of the capital, Hamilton. On 16 April 2007, the airport was formally and controversially renamed " The L.F. Wade International Airport ". In 2006, the airport throughput was some one million passengers and there were 258 flight arrivals and departures weekly during the peak June - August summer season.

The airport has U.S. Customs and Immigration pre-clearance, which means U.S.-bound passengers clear Customs in Bermuda and flights reaching the U.S. from Bermuda are deemed domestic flights.
