It is based on the Sal Island and was the only international airport of Cape Verde until the other international airport was constructed. The runway of Amilcar Cabral International Airport is used for long-haul flights and has emergency landing strips. Runway number 2 is generally used for the small planes, landing and departing from Amilcar Cabral International Airport. In the year 2004, this airport of Cape Verde witnessed a growth of almost 21% in comparison to 2003 and served more than 1,000,000 air passengers. Along with several passenger flights there are two cargo flights as well which operate from this airport. Handful of airlines which operates from Amilcar Cabral International Airport are Neos, TAAG Angola Airlines, Corsairfly, TAP Portugal, Livingston Airlines, EuroAtlantic Airways, Thomsonfly, Travel Service and so forth.

Francisco Mendes International Airport or Praia International Airport is another major airport of Cape Verde, located on Santiago Island. It was founded in the year 1961 and it was only in the year 2005 that Francisco Mendes International Airport got replaced by Praia International Airport. Today the main airlines which operate from this airport are TACV, Air Senegal International, TAP Portugal and Cabo Verde Express. The Rabil Airport of Cape Verde is another significant airport of the nation.

Boa Vista Island is the home for this airport. Thomsonfly, Hapag, Astraeus, Livingston Airlines, Neos and TACV are the airlines which operate from this airport of Cape Verde.
