Venezuela presently has many airlines offering flight service within the nation and around the world. One of the leading airlines in Venezuela was Avensa. The airline went into bankruptcy and is presently under the process of financial restructuring. The major hub of the airline was Simon Bolviar International Airport which is located in Maiquetia. Avensa was founded on May 13, 1943 as a cargo airline. The owner of the airline was a Pan American World Airways and Venezuelan businessmen. Tyey operated their first flight in December of 1943. The destination of the airline was Venezuela's oil-rich Carteru region. It was in 1944 that Avensa started its passenger flights with Lockheed 10A twins. A new fleet was added after World War II which was DC-3 Dakotas. The aircrafts which was introduced at that time became the backbone of the fleets until 1955 when Convair 340 twins were introduced. This helped to add a new service to Miami. Since its introduction in 1943 Avensa has gone through many changes.
| In the beginning of 1960s Avensa had set up a good domestic route network. Later on Avensa also started its international service to destinations like Jamaica, Miami, New Orleans and Aruba. Then eventually for better flight service Avensa incorporated its international routes with the routes of LAV (Aeropostal) and this resulted in a new airline called Viasa. In this new airline Avensa held a 45% holding. In 1964 Avensa purchased jet equipment which was in the form of Sud Caravelle jet. In 1966 when the airline purchased Convair 580s the new aircrafts called Turboprop was introduced.

To give Avensa more competitive edge a new airline called Douglas DC9s were also launched. In 1976 when Pam Am sold its 30% holding to the government of Venezuela and the airline became completely state owned. Later on many changes were done in the service of the airline and many new aircrafts were introduced like Boeing 727-100 and 727-200 jets. Then two Boeing 737-200 was also introduced. As a part of renewal program in 1980 Boeing 737-300s was introduced. During 1990's these new flights were returned when Avensa got into financial difficulties.
Due to financial difficulties Avensa is presently operating only domestic services. Carcas and Merida are the major destinations of Avensa. During its international service Avensa was one of the best airlines. Their excellent rates made the airline favorite among many.
