Norfolk Jet Express was founded in May 1997 by the residents of the Norfolk Island and the businessman Gregg Prechelt, the Chief Executive and Chairman of Norfolk Jet Express. Finally the airline’s services to Australia started its operations with a Boeing 737-400 having 12 business class seats and 128 economy class seats. The Boeing 737-400 was wet leased from Air Nauru on behalf of Norfolk Air Express. The airline expanded its operations in August 2004 by inaugurating a Fokker F100 to Auckland. The Fokker F100 was leased from Alliance Airlines with a configuration of 8 business class seats and 89 economy seats. The flights to Auckland provided by the Norfolk Air Express were soon ceased because of increasing costs in that particular route.

On June 4, 2005, Norfolk Jet Express underwent voluntary liquidation due to the Norfolk Island Government $569,000 in unpaid landing services and fees. An unresolved amount of the airline to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne airports for landing fees and to the lease giver of the airline’s Fokker 100 aircraft and Boeing 737. All the flights of Norfolk Jet Express for 4, 5 and 7 June flying to and from Brisbane and Sydney, however, went according to their schedule while an alternative provision of service solution was provided. After many discussions, the official secretary of Norfolk Island Government, Peter Maywald, declared on June 7 that Air Nauru and Qantas would jointly offer replacement services for at least a period of 12 months.

During the first week after liquidation, the aircraft of Alliance Airlines were used for services, following which the airline planned that Qantas would start its operations from June 11 by utilizing Air Nauru Boeing 737 aircraft that was chartered by the Government of Norfolk Island.
