Horizon Air was founded in 1981 and the initial route was from the city of Seattle to Yakima in Washington. After acquiring other airlines, there was increase in the business by the increase in the destinations of those acquired airlines. Among the regional airlines, the acquisition has led to the formation of the Horizon Airlines as one of the largest regional airlines. The base of Horizon Air is in SeaTac, Washington in the United States. This airline provides services to the cities in the United States and Canada. The Horizon Air hub is in Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and in other places like Portland International Airport and the Los Angeles International Airport. In order to capture the market, Horizon Air had flights in collaboration with the Frontier Airlines. The name of these flights was Frontier JetExpress. After three years of partnerships, the Horizon Air and the Frontier Airlines parted ways and the fleet that belonged to the Frontier JetExpress was reintroduced as the Horizon Air fleet. The parent company of the Horizon Air is the Alaska Air Group and the CEO of this airline is Jeff Pinneo.
| The fleet of Horizon Air consists of twenty Bombardier CRJ-700ER, eighteen De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q200 and thirty three 33 De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q400. All the aircraft of Horizon Air is more than five years old. There are expansion and upgradation plans of the Horizon Airlines. The De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q200 would be replaced with the De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q400 and the De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q200 would be gradually phased out. The livery of the Horizon Air initially was the painting of a beach and sunset with the name Horizon written on it.

Now the livery is very lively and colorful and it has not been changed much. Some of the fleet has the names of the universities and other nicknames painted on them at the tail ends of the aircraft.
The destinations covered by the Horizon Air in Canada are Calgary, Kamloops/Sun Peaks, Vancouver, Edmonton, Kelowna and the Victoria. In United States, there are Horizon Air flights to cities like Burbank, Los Angeles, Eureka/Arcata, Oakland, Fresno, Ontario, Redding/Red Bluff, San Diego, Palm Springs, San Jose, Santa Rosa, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Boise, Sun Valley, Billings, Idaho Falls, Butte, Lewiston, Bozeman, Helena, Missoula, Kalispell, Las Vegas, Eugene, Reno, Klamath Falls, North Bend/Coos Bay, Redmond/Bend, Pendleton, Seattle, Bellingham, Walla Walla, Spokane, Pasco, Pullman and the Baja California Sur.
