Atlantic Airlines

The Atlantic Airlines is the national airline serving the Faroe Islands. The airline is known for operating domestic helicopter services and the international passenger services that is operated from the base of Vágar Airport, on the Faroese island of Vágar. The airport at the Vagar was constructed by the British army during the Second World War. In the 1980s the creation of the Faroese airline company started during the 1980s. Since then the umber of passengers were steadily increased and the Danish carrier Maersk Air enjoyed the monopoly as the sole airline to serve the Faroe Islands.

The Atlantic Airlines was established in the year 1987 between the Faroese Government (51%) and Danish airline Cimber Air. The flights were started between the Vágar and Copenhagen on 28 March 1988 using a British Aerospace BAe 146. The new airline company aimed made a Faroese aviation industry. The company also aimed in improving the existing service stage. Since 1963 several regular air links connecting the faroes were in operation especially between the island and the Denmark. In the early 1980s calls for creating a Faroese airline company was proposed.
The Atlantic Airlines had a very disturbed beginning in the onset. The Faroe Islands underwent a severe economic problem in the early 1990s. The local Faroese government delivered a 75m DKK providing aid to the ailing carrier. Until 1995 the Atlantic Airways did not break into any kind of profit. The flights were launched for the Reykjavík in 1995 with the co-operation of the Air Iceland. In the second half of the 1990s the Atlantic Airlines flight schedule added with the Billund in Denmark and Aberdeen in the UK.

In this way there had been a growth in the number of destinations and passenger numbers along with the growth of the airlines finance including a second BAe 146 added to the fleet in 2000. The launch of this new aircraft provided services to London (Stansted) in the UK and the Norwegian capital Oslo. One fleet of Atlantic Airlines is responsible for operating a regular service by helicopter. Towards the beginning the helicopter service operated by this airline was a standalone company. The Atlantic Airlines also perform search and rescue duties when required. The Atlantic Airlines more than last five years has developed considerable profits of between 8 and 13 million DKK.
