The tourism in Slovak Republic got a major boost with the introduction of several airlines. The major tourist attractions of Slovak Republic comprise of folk architecture, natural landscapes, mountains, caves, medieval castles spas and ski resorts. The tourist influx to the region of Slovak Republic is close to about more than 1.6 million and the most attractive destinations of the region are the capital of Bratislava and the High Tatras. Most of the visitors come from the Czech Republic as they make about 26 percent of the total tourists, Poland about 15 percent and Germany about 11 percent.
One of the main reasons that can be attributed for the increase in the tourism prospects in Slovak Republic is the presence of numerous castles, most of which are in ruins. One of the best-known castles is the Bojnice Castle, which is often considered as one of the best filming location by the film fraternity of the world. The Spiš Castle is the largest fortified European castle as considered by the UNESCO. There are several others like, Orava Castle, Bratislava Castle and the ruins of Devín Castle. Another major tourist attraction is the Tatra Mountains, the highest part of the Carpathians. The Tatra Mountains offers great facilities for skiing, hiking and mountaineering.
| It could be said that the tourism industry of Slovak Republic saw a remarkable increase since independence. By the late 1990s the country received about more than 500,000 visitors per year. There are several international airports in Bratislava, Košice, Pieštany, Sliac, Žilina, and Poprad. One of the largest and the biggest airport in Slovakia is M. R. Štefánik in Bratislava. It is important to mention that at present low-cost air companies have become very much popular in Slovak Republic. Sky Europe and Ryanair are two of the most important.
