Macedonia or the Republic of Macedonia is a land bounded country situated on the Balkan Peninsula in the southeastern part of Europe. It is enclosed by Albania, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece. Railways and highways are the major means of transportation in and around the different regions of Macedonia whereas the airports are the primary means of traveling to the neighboring as well as other European countries, the total number of airports in Macedonia being seventeen, out of which eleven have got paved runways and the other six unpaved runways. The Skopje Airport and the Ohrid Airport are the two most important airports in Macedonia. The Skopje Airport or the Skopje Alexander the Great Airport earlier popular as Petrovec Airport is the biggest international airport in Macedonia. It serves Skopje, the capital city of the nation as also as the base of MAT Macedonian Airlines. The government of the country made an announcement in 2006 December about its plans to change the name of the airport by renaming it after Alexander the Great to flicker a new political argument with Greece that believes Alexander the Great, a portion of its heritage. The Skopje Airport is opting for a development program of the airport that will increase the number of passengers serves per year threefold.

The current number of passengers served by the Skopje Airport, which is 650,000, is planned to be changed to1.5 million passengers. It is also renovating and improving its existing facilities that comprise developed electrical systems, improvement of self-service devices of check-in, x-ray machines and formation of a directorial section at the terminal. According to the Public Enterprise for Airport Services of Macedonia the renovated terminal is about to be opened in 2008. It is thinking of outsourcing duty-free services and catering services at this airport and also at the Ohrid Airport.
