Deutsche Lufthansa AG is the second biggest European airline after the first biggest one – Air France – KLM. Deutsche Lufthansa AG derives its name from Luft, which means air in German, and from Hansa, which comes from the strong trading group of the medieval period, the Hanseatic League. Deutsche Lufthansa AG is the flag carrier of Germany and the sixth leading international airline in respect of the total number of passengers that it serves. Lufthansa serves more than 200 destinations across 100 countries. Lufthansa along with its partners serves more than 410 destinations across the world. This popular German airline features the second biggest airline fleet of passengers in the world if all the services offered by Lufthansa by Lufthansa CityLine, SWISS, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Augsburg Airways, Contact Air and Germanwings are taken together.
Having its base in Cologne, Deutsche Lufthansa AG serves mostly its major base at the Frankfurt International Airport and also its secondary hub at the Munich International Airport. It is one of the important members of Star Alliance, which was developed in 1997 along with United Airlines, Thai Airways, Scandinavian Airline Systems and Air Canada. The Lufthansa Group is, at present, the operator of over 400 aircrafts and has got 100,000 staffs across the world. Lufthansa served more than 564 million passengers in the year 2007.

Lufthansa was established in Berlin on the 6th of January in 1926 after a merger of Junkers Luftverkehr and Deutsche Aero Lloyd. Operating since 1933, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, which was the official carrier of the Nazi party, was known to be the favorite airline company of Adolf Hitler.
