A member of the European Union, Cyprus remained under the British control for a considerable period. The country secured its independence in the year 1960 and from then on has come a long way. The Cyprus of today is a growing modern nation state in the region. Its travel, business and hospitality sector has continued to grow in spite of some turbulent political history. Riding the travel and hospitality boom of Cyprus, the aviation sector too has grown big. Cyprus today boasts of three international airports and a few military and civil ones.
Ercan International Airport is the major international airport of Cyprus. Based in the capital city of Nicosia, it is one of the principal airports that connect this part of Cyprus to the world. | Larnaca International Airport is the main global gateway of Cyprus. One of the larger international airports in the region, Larnaca International airport of Cyprus is located near Larnaca. This airport of Cyprus has one passenger terminal that comprises two connected airside buildings and a large common hall where all arriving passengers are rested. There are however no boarding bridges and passengers have to reach to the airplane by the approaching bus of the airline. There is a cargo terminal, a large engineering hanger and separate facilities for fuelling and provisions for the light aircrafts.

Paphos International Airport is one of the other major airports in the region. This airport services some of the major airliners operating in the region. Aeroflot, Cyprus Airways, Finnair, Air Holland, Monarch Airlines, Aero Llyod are some of the popular air operators at Paphos International Airport of Cyprus.
The civil aviation scene of Cyprus has undergone some positive changes. With enhanced communication and transportation facilities at the major airports in Cyprus, the number of important airliners operating here has increased. However, more expansion and modernization plans are underway and their implementation is likely to make Cyprus a major airline hub in the region.
