Copa Airlines

The Copa Airlines is one of the major airlines serving Panama. It is recognized as the national flag carrier airline of Panama based in the Panama City. The main operation base of the Copa Airlines is the Tocumen International Airport and from here it operates more than 116 daily scheduled flights to 40 destinations in 21 countries in North America, Central America, South America and The Caribbean.

When the airline was first established it was established with the name as Compañia Panameña de Aviacion on June 21, 1944. It started its flight service on June 21, 1944 and started operating on August 15, 1947. Several Panamanian investors founded the airline with assistance from Pan America. The Copa Airlines first began its operations with the domestic flights that were operated by a fleet of Douglas DC-3 and Douglas C-47 aircraft. The Copa Airlines started the first international service in the 1960s with its services to the cities like Jamaica, Colombia, and Costa Rica. Till the 1980s the Copa Airlines had to face constant competition from the Air Panama. At that time it operated flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Miami, Florida.

In the year 1998 the Continental Airlines acquired 49% of the airline. In the year 2000 the Copa Airlines started its service to places like to Los Angeles, Cancún, Mexico, and Orlando, São Paulo, Brazil. After three years and in 2004 it started servicing in John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. In the year 2005 the Copa Airlines purchased 90% of the Colombian domestic air carrier Aero República. On December 15, 2005, the Copa Holdings, S.A. the parent company of the Copa Airlines launched 14 million shares in the New York Stock Exchange.

In the year 2006 the Copa Airlines started servicing to six new destinations, which include Manaus, Brazil, Maracaibo, Venezuela, Montevideo, Uruguay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic and others. The Copa Airlines also earned several awards and honors, which include the "Tourism without Borders" Award, Federation of Tourism Chambers of Central America in the year 2002. It earned the Developing Airline of the Year” Award, Air Finance Journal in the April 2003.

At present the Copa Airlines flies to 40 destinations in 21 countries in North America, Central America, South America and The Caribbean.
