Japan

Japan is an archipelago in the Pacific. It is is separated from the east coast of Asia by the Sea of Japan. It is approximately the size of Montana. The four main islands of Japan are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. The Ryukyu chain to the southwest was U.S. occupied from 1945 to 1972. But soon Japan regained back its control.

The legend says that the creation of Japan is linked to the sun goddess, from whom the emperors were descended. The first of them was Jimmu, who was supposed to have ascended the throne in 660 B.C., a tradition that constituted official doctrine until 1945.Japan offers a very wide range of attractions, from historical and cultural treasures to modern and futuristic sights and beautiful forests, mountains and sea coasts.

Most of Japan's major cities offer efficient public transportation networks, and are connected with each other by the shinkansen, the Japanese bullet train. The Japanese cuisine is one of Japan's greatest attractions. A great variety of Japanese cuisine and food from around the world can be enjoyed in Japan.
When you travel to Japan, you will see centuries-old historic shrines and castles. You will frequently stop in small, quaint villages where local artisans are busy at work making baskets, carving wood or dying silk. You might witness a Geisha performance or enjoy a glass of sake at a local bar or restaurant. Wherever you land in Japan the country's culture comes alive with every experience.

Tokyo's Haneda Airport is by far Japan's busiest airport, handling most of the capital's domestic flights. Tokyo's Narita Airport handles mostly international flights and only a very small number of domestic flights. Osaka's Kansai Airport serves both, international and domestic flights. It took over a large share of traffic mainly international formerly handled by Osaka's second airport, Itami Airport. Nevertheless, Itami Airport remains Japan's second busiest hub for domestic air traffic. The other major airports in Japan include Nagoya's Central Japan Airport, Fukuoka Airport, Sapporo's Shin-Chirose Airport, Kobe Airport and Okinawa's Naha Airport.

The international flights to Japan have never been cheaper thanks to ever increasing competition between the airlines. There are various special offers on the types of flights to Japan are now available. It was all due to the campaign by the Japanese government to increase the number of foreign visitors. Few of the world's major airlines and airports do not offer flights to Japan. The country's own two leading airlines, Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA), both serve a broad range of international destinations. Japan's fourth largest international airport is Fukuoka Airport, which links the city with several Asian destinations. Many other Japanese airports have a small numbers of international flights, mainly to Korea and China.
