Brunei or Brunei Darussalam, which is officially known as the State of Brunei (abode of peace) is a country located in the island of Borneo. Surrounded by the coastline of South East China Sea and countries like Malaysia and Sarawak Brunei is one of the most beautiful countries in this part of Asia. It was on January 1, 1984, that Brunei or the State of Brunei gained its independence from the United Kingdom. Brunei covers a geographical area of around 5,765 square kilometers which is made up of two unconnected parts.

Human population of Brunei is mainly concentrated in the Western part and the mountainous areas in the eastern part are just home to around 10,000 people. At present the population of Brunei is more than 3,80,000 and around 45,000 people are residents of Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital city.

Speaking about Brunei it is very important to mention about its rich history. The period from 14th century to 16th century AD is the most important part of the history of Brunei. During this time, the Sultanate of Brunei used to dominate the entire island of Borneo and the Southwestern part of Philippines. It was in the beginning of 17th century that the dominance of this regional power slowly went down due to the European influence. The brief war of Brunei with Spain and its victory is a very important part of its history. The Royal Bruneian Empire totally declined in the 19th century when it lost a major part of its territory to the White Rajahs of Sarawak. After that, Brunei was transformed into a British protectorate between the period 1888 and 1984. Later in 1960s, a small rebellion broke out against the monarchy but it could not make any effect as it was suppressed by the United Kingdom.
