Ghana Airways |
Ghana Airways is the name of an airline that was based at Kotoka International Airport, Accra, in Ghana. In the year 2004, all operations of Ghana Airways ceased and the airline company was placed into liquidation. Ghana Airways has been replaced by a new international airline, Ghana International Airlines, which has been formed by a partnership between the Government and the United States based private investors. Presently, the Ghana International Airlines is Ghana’s flag carrier airline that is based in Accra in the state of Ghana. The airline operates scheduled cargo and passenger services with its main base in Kotoka International Airport, Accra.
History of Ghana Airways
The Ghana Airways was founded on July 4, 1958 and its operations started from July 15, 1958. From the very first day the Ghana Airways took over the domestic as well as the international services of West African Airways. In September 1991, the domestic services of Ghana Airways were discontinued.
| In the early 2000s, chartered Airbus A330 aircraft of Ghana Airways from Canadian operator SkyService Airlines and McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft joined together for performing its North American operations, partially. In late 2003, Ghana Airways suffered from DC-10 aircraft that became inoperable because of maintenance, thus forced the airline to cancel a large segment of its long-range airplanes, until the airline purchased two ex-Hawaiian Airlines DC-10 airplanes.
