The advent of flights in the world of transportation has helped cover a huge distance in a very short span of time. The boom in the aviation industry has led to cut throat competition among the national and private airlines. This competition has proved to be a boon to the middle class traveler availing domestic as well as international flights. Before this boom, availing flights was a costly affair. So traveling by air, otherwise hassle free was only accessible to the affluent. With the signing of the on-sky contracts, several private companies made a foray into the field of aviation. Their main aim was to make more passengers avail their flights. This could not be achieved without reducing the price of the tickets and making the tickets affordable to the masses. This led to the emergence of several low cost airlines, which started providing discount flights.
The Low-Cost Airlines started leaving out on many traditional facilities to offer discount air tickets to their passengers. This concept had its origin in the USA and passed over to Europe in the early 1990s.Subsequently this concept spread throughout the world, and now almost every country has at least one low-cost carrier. The term low-cost carrier was used to define airlines whose operating cost was lower than their competitors. But now, the term has been given a broader meaning which includes all airlines which offer discount flights, irrespective of their operational cost. The airlines providing discount flights usually have a single passenger class, instead of the elaborate, business, economy and first classes. Generally these low-cost airlines providing cheap air fare use a single type of carrier (usually an Airbus A320 or a Boeing 737).
| This reduces the cost of maintenance. Many modern conveniences present on other airlines were also curtailed to reduce the price of tickets.
Besides the low-cost carriers like Southwest Airlines, Ryanair, Easy Jet, Air Asia, Virgin Blue, bmibaby, Germanwings, Air Deccan and Jetstar, reputed airlines like Air France, Singapore airlines, British Airways and likewise also provide discount flights. These airlines usually provide discount flights during the off seasons. The discount flights prove helpful for middle class passengers and students, who otherwise can not afford an air ticket.
