The traveling experience worldwide has undergone a sea change with the coming of the air flights. Transportation has never been any easier. Flights have helped in reducing the time taken for international or even intercontinental traveling. But air flights also have their share of disadvantages. The facilities that the air flights provided were not for free and the cost of tickets were beyond the reach of the common man. The amount of money spent by the airlines in maintaining an aircraft and on fuels had its effect on the cost of the tickets of airplanes. So traveling by air, otherwise hassle-free, was only accessible to the affluent. With the signing of the on-sky contracts, several private companies made a foray into the field of aviation. Their main aim was to make more passengers avail their flights. This could not be achieved without reducing the price of the tickets and making the tickets affordable to the masses. This led to the emergence of several low cost airlines, which started providing cheap flights.
The Low-Cost Airlines started leaving out on many traditional facilities to offer cheap air tickets to their passengers. This concept had its origin in the USA and passed over to Europe in the early 1990s. Subsequently this concept spread throughout the world, and now almost every country has at least one low-cost carrier. The term low-cost carrier was used to define airlines whose operating cost was lower than their competitors. But now, the term has been given a broader meaning which includes all airlines which offer cheap flights, irrespective of their operational cost.

The airlines providing cheap flights usually have a single passenger class, instead of the elaborate, business, economy and first classes. Generally these low-cost airlines providing cheap air fare use a single type of carrier (usually an Airbus A320 or a Boeing 737). This reduces the cost of maintenance. Many modern conveniences present on other airlines were also curtailed to reduce the price of tickets.
The first low cost carrier was Pacific Southwest Airlines, in the USA. European companies soon followed suit.
