The BWIA is a West Indies Airways and is the abbreviated form of British West Indian Airways. The airline was founded in the year 1940. The BWIA was one of the most important civil aviation players in the West Indies. USA, Canada and the United Kingdom got the direct services of BWIA. However, since 31st December 2006 the company ceased to exist. The year 1940 was important for BWIA as it was established in that year, since then many modifications were made in BWIA airline.
In the beginning the services of BWIA was confined between Trinidad and Barbados. In the year 1947 a major transformation was done, when British South American Airways took away BWIA but the name was not changed and remained as BWIA. Another important landmark came in the way of BWIA when in 1949 British South American Airways collaborated with British Overseas Airways Corporation.

Within a span of twenty five years BWIA started making a good dent into the international civil aviation networks. In 1967 the airline introduced Boeing 727 and with such efforts, in 1975 BWIA reopened its London route and therefore in 1980 it became an international airline service provider. The heyday of the airline was observed when it purchased the MD-83. Previously the government of Trinidad and Tobago acquired mostly all the shares of the company but gradually BWIA in 1990s onwards became a privatized company. During this time many changes took place with BWIA in respect of technicalities, official staffs and many more.

The major change that occurred was when the color of its aircrafts was changed.Some of the international destinations for BWIA were Antigua, Georgetown, Kingston, London Heathrow, New York, Miami, Paramaribo, Toronto, Caracas, St. Maarten, St. Lucia and Barbados.
The airline for at-least sixty-five years had made a very formidable dent into the international civil aviation network.
